Self-Ligating Braces
- Comfort - Self-ligation refers to the fact that these braces have tiny clips that hold the wire in place rather than relying on elastic or steel ties. The technology of self-ligating brackets allows the application of a continuous gentle force, which means less discomfort throughout your treatment.
- Hygiene - Self-ligating braces are more hygienic. Due to the fact that elastic ties are not required to secure the wire in place, it is easier to brush and clean around these braces.
- Efficiency - In certain cases, treatment time may be reduced with self-ligating braces due to the light continuous force that can be applied, as well as the reduced friction.
Ceramic Braces
We use Clear Braces as a more asthetic alternative to metal braces. These braces are translucent for a more "invisible" look. These ceramic braces will not stain or discolour.
Invisalign
The Invisalign System uses the latest 3-D computer technology to create clear, customized, removable appliances called aligners, which can be effective in straightening teeth, without having to wear traditional braces.
Orthodontics to Correct Bite and Jaw Problems
Removable Appliances (“Bite Plates”)
Removable appliances can be used to help correct bite problems such as deep overbites and crossbites, as well as minor tooth misalignment.
Expanders
Palatal expander appliances may be cemented to the teeth or be removable. These appliances are used to widen the upper jaw so that both jaws will fit properly together. They may also be helpful with making space to align the teeth.
Headgear
Headgear can be a very effective appliance to help direct the growth of a child or young adolescent. It is typically used for those cases where there is an excessive protrusion of the upper front teeth. When we recommend headgear for our patients, we only suggest that it be used in the evening and when sleeping.
Jaw Surgery
Some of our patients may have significant skeletal and/or soft tissue discrepancies that could lead to bite problems, or facial imbalance. In certain cases, these problems cannot be overcome by conservative orthodontic treatment alone. If this is the case, your orthodontist will work together, as a team, with an oral surgeon (a dental specialist in surgical treatment of the jaws) to align the teeth, correct the jaw discrepancy, improve function and improve facial balance.
Protective Mouthguards
We highly recommend the use of protective mouth guards for all of our patients who participate in sports.. Whether you are going through orthodontics or not, it is very important to protect your teeth when participating in contact sports. Please ask us which type of mouth guard would be best suited for you.
X-Rays
In most cases, all of the x-rays that are required to make an appropriate diagnosis and orthodontic treatment plan are taken in our office. We have a state of the art digital panoramic and cephalometric x-ray unit as well as the ability to take intraoral (in the mouth) x-rays. All x-rays that are taken are done for a specific diagnostic reason (to monitor growth or bite changes), and are only taken when absolutely necessary.
